The Anunnaki, and What the Tablets Actually Say

Of all the “we were made by someone else” stories, the Anunnaki is the biggest one going around: a race of extraterrestrials from a hidden planet called Nibiru who came to Earth to mine gold and genetically engineered us to be their workforce. It’s a hell of a story, and it’s the natural next stop after the Book of Enoch. So let me do for it exactly what I did there — pull apart what’s real, what’s read-in, and what’s just made up.

And here’s the headline: the Sumerian tablets are real, the Anunnaki are real, and there genuinely is an ancient creation myth on those tablets. But almost everything the internet “knows” about it comes from one man — and the scholars who actually read the language say he invented a great deal of it.

What’s real: the oldest words on Earth

Start with the Sumerians, because they’re astonishing without any aliens. Over five thousand years ago in Mesopotamia, they built one of the first civilisations and did something no one had done before: they wrote things down, in cuneiform, pressed into clay. Thousands of those tablets survive. This is, quite literally, humanity’s oldest literature.

And the Anunnaki are in it — but not as spacemen. In the actual Sumerian texts, the Anunnaki are the gods of the pantheon: offspring of An, the sky god, and Ki, the earth goddess, the divine beings who decreed the fates of mankind. The word itself means something like “offspring of Anu,” or “princely blood.” They’re a pantheon of deities, the way the Greeks had theirs and the Norse had theirs. Gods. Not astronauts.

The creation story that really is on the tablets

Here’s the part that genuinely raises the hair on your arms, and you don’t need Sitchin for it.

In the Sumerian and Babylonian myths — the Atrahasis epic above all — the lesser gods, the Igigi, get sick to death of the back-breaking labour of digging the rivers and canals, and they down tools and revolt. So the senior gods, led by Enki and the mother goddess Ninhursag, come up with a solution: they create human beings to take over the work. And they fashion us — this is the detail that stops you — from clay, mixed with the essence of a slain god.

Sit with that. The oldest people on earth, in their oldest writing, recorded a belief that humanity was shaped by higher beings, out of the earth, to share in their labour. And if it rings a bell, it should — Genesis has man formed from the dust, Enoch has its watchers and its giants. Across separate cultures, humanity kept telling versions of the same story: we were made, by something greater, and there’s a reason we’re here. That’s real, it’s documented, and it’s worth a lifetime of thought.

Where the aliens come from — and where they go

Nearly all the modern “Anunnaki were extraterrestrials” lore traces back to a single author: Zecharia Sitchin, and his 1976 book The 12th Planet. Sitchin claimed the Anunnaki came from Nibiru — a hidden planet beyond Neptune on a 3,600-year orbit — landed hundreds of thousands of years ago to mine gold, and genetically engineered humans as a slave species to dig it up.

It’s a brilliant yarn. It is also, according to the people who can actually read the languages, made up. Sitchin’s work has been resoundingly rejected by Assyriologists, historians and scientists as pseudoarchaeology. Their charge is specific and damning: he misrepresents the texts — quoting out of context, chopping quotations short, and mistranslating Sumerian words to mean things they don’t. His version of the Anunnaki, the experts say, appears nowhere in actual Sumerian literature. Even his signature detail — humans created to mine gold as slaves — isn’t in the Sumerian corpus. The tablets say we were made to assist the gods in their labour and the work of creation, not to be pickaxe-swinging miners for an alien gold rush. And Nibiru, the planet the whole thing hangs on, has no astronomical basis at all — it’s better known now as the engine of the failed 2012 “doomsday” panic.

The honest read

So why does it grip people, including me, if it’s bunk? Because the real thing is uncanny enough — an ancient story of being made from clay by higher beings — and because those cross-cultural echoes are genuinely strange and beautiful. The pull is honest. The leap is not.

“Remarkable ancient parallel” is not “aliens literally did it.” And you don’t get to skip the part where the man who sold the world the alien version was, by the verdict of everyone qualified to check, reading a science-fiction novel into ancient poetry.

So do what I keep begging you to do: go and read the Atrahasis yourself. It’s free and it’s short, and the truth in it — the oldest humans on earth writing that the gods shaped us from the dirt to carry their burden — is stranger, older, and more human than any gold-mining spaceman Sitchin ever dreamed up. The Anunnaki were gods, not astronauts, as far as anything we can actually read. Be amazed by the real tablets. And be most suspicious, always, of the version that arrives with a hidden twelfth planet and a sequel.
